Rev. John A. D'Elia, Senior Minister

I’m never 100% sure of how best to describe myself in a spot like this. I’m a Christian, which if I’m honest simply means that I am stumbling along on the journey of following Christ as authentically as I can. Whatever else I might say in a sermon or lesson or conversation, the goal of everything I do is to peel back some of what blocks our understanding of who Jesus Christ is, and I’m always looking for partners in that important task.

Now about me... I’m married with a grown daughter and young son. I was born and raised in the shadow of the film industry in Southern California, and I’ve always been interested in the role various media play in shaping our attitudes and lives. I’m also an historian, with a book published by Oxford University Press on a theologian named George Eldon Ladd and his impact on American evangelicalism in the decades after the Second World War (see image below). I love college basketball (UCLA), baseball (LA Dodgers) and football (both kinds), as well as movies and books.

Some professional details: I graduated from UCLA with a BA in English Literature in 1986, from Fuller Theological Seminary with an M.Div. and Th.M. in Church History in 1990 and 1992, and from the University of Stirling in Scotland with a Ph.D. in History in 2005. I’m ordained in the Presbyterian Church USA, and have served churches in Southern California, Edinburgh, Scotland and now in London. For the 12 years before I came to London I worked in Christian non-profit organizations including Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles, Fuller Seminary and the Presbyterian Foundation.
